When Illinois became a state in 1819, Whiteside County was included in Tazewell County along with most of Northern Illinois. In 1827 the area fell within Jo Daviess County except for what became Portland and Prophetstown Townships which were included in Henry County. On January 16, 1836, Whiteside County was formed with its current boundaries. Whiteside County is located in Northwestern Illinois along the Mississippi River. The terrain varies from steep limestone bluffs along the Mississippi in the Northwestern part of the county to the flat bottom lands in the Southwest with rolling hills to the east.
Whiteside County was named after Gen. Samuel Whiteside, a distinguished officer of the Indian wars in this section of the country from 1812 until the close of the Black Hawk war. During the latter he was first Major, afterwards Colonel, then General of Volunteers. In his pursuit of Black Hawk in 1832, he passed through this section, and burned Prophet's Town. General Whiteside came to the Illinois Territory in around 1806, and he settled in what is now Madison County. General Whiteside died in 1861, and was buried near the home of his daughter in Christian County, Illinois. Gen. Whiteside participated actively in the affairs of this State for much of his life.
Whiteside County has an abundance of highly fertile land that is great for corn, oats, rye, barley and potatoes. The land yields large crops each year for Illinois. Hogs are raised in great numberswhithin Whiteside County, and a great deal of attention is given to rearing cattle and horses, some parts of the county being especially well fitted for pasturage. There are some extensive areas of sandy land, on which the soil is thin, and when it is once broken through the tract becomes a waste of drifting Baud, spreading from year to year, and carrying ruin beyond its original bounds.
